WALLS OF THOUGHT

  • A connection was formed between the cities of Hong Kong and Austin over the deep appreciation of all things ambient. Norvik and I met via mutual labels in which our music was released, I had loved and respected Norvik’s work long before we began chatting.

And when the the idea of us working on something together came up via direct messaging, I was completely on board.

We began at the beginning, like all good stories.

Norvik sent me a few pieces he had begun working on, idea-starters, really. And I almost instantly heard the entire direction of where I wanted these pieces to go. From a seed, we grew flowers. From opposite ends of the world, we laid a thread of connection.

Oftentimes the internet can seem like a pretty wild place, but it’s projects like this that make me hopeful for the future. There are so many good people in the world. And so many talented musicians. Norvik is nothing short of exemplary.

It was an absolute pleasure working together and the result is nothing short of ambient bliss. Please take a moment to sit and breathe with these.

Norvik is the instrumental music project of Gabriel Chan.

Norvik's birth came out of need for stories and ways to tell them. Piano, synthesizers, strings, field recordings, noise and stories blend to form a cinematic amalgam in Norvik’s music. Influenced by his classical music upbringing, literature and diverse cultural background, Norvik is obsessed with the texture and atmosphere of sound, and how it reveals layers of hidden stories as time passes.

Raised in Melbourne and living in Hong Kong, he has been scoring short films and commercials as well as being a filmmaker himself.

He makes Mood Music that is part ambient music, part neo-classical music and part electronic nosies, experimenting with different instruments and sounds to create music described as melancholic and decadent.

His favorite thing to do is creating soundtracks to non-existent films.

  • TJ Dumser [Six Missing] - synthesizers, pianos, guitars, effects, mix + mastering engineer.

Gabriel Chan [Norvik] - synthesizers, effects, textures, and programming.

Recorded and mixed at Cabin in the Woods, Austin, TX.

It is recommended that you place headphones on and listen while in a darkened + quiet room, though wherever you most prefer to listen is best. Closing your eyes may result in occasional inner mind journeying, this is intentional. Allow this soundtrack to guide you out and back. Safe journey.
